The Smoked Sidecar
Made by: David
The classic sidecar originated around the end of the First World War in either London or Paris, depending on who you ask. This version pays homage to that burning, sootier time by encasing the cognac and citrus cocktail in woodsmoke, then brings the drama by unleashing a plume of said smoke and, quite possibly, your sprinkler system.
Recipe
The Smoked Sidecar
Ingredients
1½ ounce VS or VSOP cognac
¾ ounce Cointreau
¾ ounce fresh lemon juice, strained
Fine sugar for glass rim
Directions
Rim a coupe or martini glass with sugar.
Mix ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into glass.
Place cocktail in a bell jar or other container where oxygen can enter yet smoke can concentrate around the cocktail.
For our drink, we used a super-cool smoking gun and applewood chips, but you can also use a small fireproof dish and a palm-sized pile of food-safe chips.
Fill the bell jar or container with smoke and let cocktail sit inside until it achieves the desired level of smouldery goodness. Remove bell jar and enjoy!
